Some American Boyces looking for Bellrock Churches on Facebook

This one has been really fun!

A woman named named Boyce from the U.S. posted on the Ontario and Upper Canada Genealogy Facebook page looking for information on a couple of churches that they believed to be near Bellrock, Ontario.  Another Boyce fellow from Baltimore joined in.  Their photos are posted here.

David Jefferies, who also follows that FB page, tracked down the churches from Portland My Home.

He identified the first (the stone structure) as the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Chippewa, Ontario, Camden Township.  Chippewa is about 10 km NW of Bellrock, which is in Portland Township.

The second church (built from wood) is Bellrock United Church -- Methodist when constructed -- and is still standing.

This little puzzle had some local history and even some potential genealogical links for me.  Either way, it is fun to chase down and very satisfying to find the solution already in Portland My Home.

I do need to drive over to Bellrock and Chippewa to take up-to-date photos.  I confess that I had not heard of Chippewa before.  Time I checked it out!

  1. Hello Alan, i live on Church rd. And i can see the Chippewa church from my back yard. If you want me to take some up to date photos i could do that. Its a massive church. Very interesting. I grew up in verona and absolutely love our historic buildings.

    1. Hi Dave:

That would be great! Maybe some of the interior as well, if you can manage it.

Please send me the original camera files and I will get them on line in a suitable format.

Sounds like you could be helpful for some of our other architectural projects that are on-going.
